McKinzie - 2-Year-Old Filly

McKinzie/Lady Dude KY Bred

This was our sneaky/under the radar purchase of the sale that has some really interesting elements at play and could end up being a major value buy for the club! Let’s start off with what brought her price down:

1- She’s by a freshman sire – McKinzie

2- She’s smaller (in about the 35th-40th percentile for 2-year-old fillies at the sale)

So that’s what brought the price down…Now, let’s address these one by one…

McKinzie- McKinzie is a first crop sire who is unproven as a producer but we were big fans of him on the race track…

  • He was precocious winning his first three starts including a Grade 1 and a Grade 3
  • He was versatile in every way…He won from on and off the pace, he won Grade 1’s sprinting (The Malibu) and going two turns (The Whitney) and he won graded stakes at the ages of 2, 3, 4 and 5. He’s by a strong sire   himself– Street Sense, and is out of a Petionville mare (again, a very very sneaky good broodmare sire as evidenced by McKinzie’s success on the track)
  • 9x McKinzie’s sold at the OBS March sale and their average sales price was nearly $210K!  There were a lot of nice looking McKinzie’s…We think he’s got a big chance to “hit”

Her Size- Yes, she’s on the smaller size and being an early March foal we don’t project that she’ll grow a ton, however she has a lot of things going for her that counterbalance concerns about her size…

  • She is VERY well made.  She’s small, but she has all the right parts and angles and is super correct physically.
  • She absolutely makes up for her size with a ridiculously outsized stride length.  Despite being in the 35th-40th percentile from a size standpoint she was in the top 25% of all fillies at the sale from a stride length standpoint and her gallop out times showed that her lack of size didn’t hinder her ability to carry her speed a bit (she breezed in 10.1, galloped out 2-furlongs in 21.2 and 3-furlongs in strong 33.2).

The Plan:

We’ll give her the customary 45 day letdown period post sale and then bring her into trainer Ray Handal’s barn in mid May.  That should give us plenty of time to have her ready to debut in Saratoga this summer!
